Your first visit

What to expect as a new patient

We want your first appointment to give you clear answers, not more uncertainty. Here is exactly what happens when you come in for the first time.

Your first appointment

Allow approximately 45 to 60 minutes for your initial visit. It is longer than a standard follow-up because we do not start treatment until we understand what is actually going on. The first appointment has three components.

1. Detailed health history

We begin with a thorough history of your current complaint — how it started, what makes it better or worse, how it behaves across the day, and whether you have had previous episodes. We also take a broader health history covering medications, previous injuries, surgery and any relevant family history. This takes time, but it matters — the history often tells us more than the examination.

2. Clinical examination

Depending on your presentation, the examination will include orthopaedic testing (assessing the joints and soft tissues involved), neurological screening (reflexes, sensation, muscle strength — particularly where arm or leg symptoms are present), and postural assessment. For cervical presentations we include the upper cervical orthopaedic tests relevant to your symptoms.

Motion IQ testing is performed as part of the first assessment. This computerised range-of-motion measurement gives us objective data on how your spine is moving across all directions, compared to population norms. It establishes a baseline we can return to at progress reviews to show what has changed.

3. Imaging where indicated

Not every patient needs an X-ray. Where we believe imaging will change our diagnosis or treatment plan — and the clinical picture supports it — we have a purpose-built digital X-ray room on-site. Results are available on the same day and discussed as part of your initial report.

Your report of findings

At the end of the assessment, we sit down with you and explain what we found — in plain language, not jargon. This includes what we believe is causing your symptoms, what the Motion IQ results show, what imaging reveals if taken, and what we recommend in terms of treatment. If we believe your situation is better managed elsewhere, we will tell you and refer appropriately.

No treatment begins until you understand the findings and agree to the plan.

What to bring and wear

  • Your private health fund card if you have one (we process HICAPS claims on the spot)
  • Any relevant previous imaging — X-rays, MRI or CT scans — even if they are older
  • A list of any current medications
  • Comfortable clothing that allows access to the area of concern — loose shorts or exercise gear is ideal

Fees and health funds

We accept all major private health funds with on-site HICAPS claiming. Please call us on (07) 5478 2333 for current fee information, as rates can change.

DVA card holders are welcome — please mention this when booking. Patients with a Medicare GP Management Plan (Enhanced Primary Care / EPC) may be eligible for subsidised visits.

Parking

Free, secure underground parking is available directly beneath the building. The car park entry is on Burnett Street. You will see the signage for the Smith Street building as you enter.

Common questions

Before you come in

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You can book directly without a referral. DVA and EPC patients should mention this when booking.

Will I be adjusted on my first visit?

Only if it is appropriate after the full assessment. We do not treat before we have a clear picture of what is happening. In some presentations, the first visit is assessment only and treatment begins at the second appointment.

Is chiropractic care safe?

Chiropractic care has a strong safety record for the conditions it is used to treat. As with any health intervention, there are contraindications — which is why a thorough assessment before any treatment is non-negotiable at our clinic.

How many visits will I need?

It depends on what we find. Acute mechanical presentations often respond within four to eight visits. Chronic or complex conditions take longer. We give you a realistic estimate after the first assessment — not an open-ended commitment.
